What are suppositories?

A suppository is a medicine that is contained in a round object shaped like a cone or capsule. It is inserted into the body so that the medicine is absorbed into the body. Generally, a suppository is inserted into the anus from where it is absorbed into the body. It is used in patients who cannot take medicines orally or through IV for any reason.

Suppol Suspension are medicines in suspension. They are given for fever and pain and associated conditions. These suppositories are mostly used for small children who cannot be given tablets. Where children are ready to swallow syrups, then the suppository can be used. It is a medicine administered through the rectal route by insertion into the rectum.

The following explains how this suppository is given to children:

1) The child must be made to empty his/her bowels before the suppository is given.
2) The suppository should be handled carefully to prevent it from breaking.
3) The child can be made to lie down on the side or any convenient angle.
4) The suppository should be gently inserted into the rectum with the pointed (conical) end going in first. It should be inserted inside completely.
5) The child should be asked to remain still for a minute or two.
6) The person inserting the suppository should wash his/her hands thoroughly.
